CMI board decides to close down Quriyat plant

The board of directors of Construction Materials Industries Co (CMI) has decided to close down the company’s plant and quarry in Quriyat and terminate all the employees at the plant.

The decision of the CMI board came following the refusal of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs (MECA) to give environmental permission to the company because the plant and quarry at Quriyat is not located in the proper area, and is very near to the residential area.

“This environmental permission is affecting all other permissions to operate the plant. Since there is no environmental permission, we could not get all the other permissions required from the various Ministries to operate the Quriyat plant,” CMI said in a filing to the Muscat Securities Market (MSM) on Thursday.

The company added that the Ministry of Housing had also refused to accept the land rent because of the non-receipt of permission from the MECA. “The MECA has also served another notice on May 21, 2014 after its plant visit, stating that we do not have permission to operate the plant hereafter,” CMI said.

“Based on the above decisions from the related Ministries, the board of directors' meeting held on June 11, 2014 has decided unanimously to close the plant and quarry situated at Quriyat and terminate all the employees,” CMI added.
